In 1854, savvy Jonah Mosier saw the need for lumber in the nascent communities along the Columbia River Gorge. His hunch was shrewd and prophetic, giving rise to three successful sawmills which provided a good living to support his seven children, one of whom was Jefferson Mosier, the town's eponymous founder. Built in 1904 by Jonah's son, Jefferson, The Mosier House has served its owners over the decades in many roles. From its beginnings as a home for the Mosier family through its bed and breakfast phase, this gorgeous Victorian structure has looked out from its perch overlooking the magnificent Columbia River, dutifully assuming every task assigned it. In the 1980s, its present owners shepherded its restoration with stubborn attention to detail and tender loving care. The result is a time machine, transporting you back to a period when details mattered, when the sound on the road came not from cars, but carriages and horses' hooves.
In Jefferson's time - before air conditioning and all the electronic distractions that now lure us inside - the porch played an important social function. What a porch this is! Hugging three sides of the house, the view alone is enough to draw you there. So much to see! From the beautiful gardens to the river flowing in the distance, it's easy to imagine the Mosier family playing in the yard while the parents watched, rocking perhaps, on the porch. But the porch is just the beginning.
Throughout the Mosier House is the same faithfulness to detail. With its Tiffany lamps, Victorian furniture, and large elegant throw rugs, you can almost imagine the sound of Elgar or Sousa coming from some old gramophone in the parlor. But that was then. Now, bring your laptop for the free Wi-Fi, your CDs and DVDs, and catch your favorite shows on the cable TV. There are two living areas on the main level, each with views of the property through beautifully crafted windows.
The kitchen of the Mosier house is just modern enough to make meals convenient while still preserving the Victorian ambiance of Mama Mosier's day. Its beautiful wood floors and humble unfinished furniture are the perfect complement to the gas stove and clean, white-tiled counters. It's fully stocked, though, with plenty of utensils. Just like Mama Mosier, you'll have a nice porcelain double sink to wash dishes. (No dishwasher). Gather for meals around the wooden tables in the dining room and as you eat, look around the room and appreciate the craftsmanship of the woodwork and the leaded windows.
The Mosier House has 5 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms and will sleep 11. The house is equipped with one air conditioning unit on each level to help keep you cool on those hot summer days! All the bedrooms and bathrooms continue the Victorian ambiance in the rest of the house. Each is brightly lit with both natural light through big windows, skylights, and plenty of lamps. All of the bedrooms are on the upper level and, since it was a B&B at one time, each bedroom except for one has a sink and a mirror. The master bedroom has a king bed, three bedrooms have queen beds, and the other bedroom has a full bed and a twin bed. Step through the beautifully crafted French doors in one of the bedrooms to the deck and enjoy yet another vista offered by the house. The three full bathrooms and the half bath continue the owner's thoughtful attention to detail. From the claw-foot tub to the intricate patterns in the white-tiled floor, to the antique looking fixtures, each preserves the atmosphere characteristic of the whole house.
A key local attraction is the Mosier Twin Tunnels State Park, a pedestrian and bicycle route through two historic tunnels along the Columbia River Scenic Highway just west of town. This five-mile route connects Mosier with the City of Hood River. And of course, its proximity to the Columbia make it ideal for waterskiing, windsurfing, paragliding, sailing and fishing. Mosier house is just six minutes from downtown Hood River. This, of course, means that you're just minutes away from the 71 restaurants and great shopping in the vicinity of Hood River. Visit one of the many orchards in the area and pick your own world-renowned pears and apples. Or, visit one of the 19 wineries in the area and experience the sun-soaked, Columbia Gorge grape. Skiers: Mosier House is just a half-hour from Mount Hood Meadows.
