Remember those Lincoln Logs you used to play with as a kid, piling the little notched logs, one upon another, according to some ideal cabin you had in your head? Well, here's that cabin! Though you're highly unlikely to encounter any of the large, furry mammals after which it's named (little or big), you will be situated in a wonderfully wooded spot at the base of Glade Trail. Formerly known as Blossom Trail (after Judge Blossom who, in 1888, opened a wagon route along the trail), in winter you can fully expect to see skiers whooshing by in their downhill run from Timberline Lodge to Government Camp. In summer, Glade Trail is home to mountain bikers, testing their mettle on the same route. No matter who happens by, you'll be snug in this charming cabin which, with its cable TV, WiFi, and DVD player, is rustic in appearance only.
Inside you'll feel the same rough-hewn ambiance, with only intermittent islands of modernity like the flat-screen TV and DVD disrupting that pioneer feeling. The soft leather chairs will offer a welcome respite from the rigors of skiing, hiking, cycling, or anything that makes for weary bones. Put your feet up, watch a movie, or get out the laptop and check on local activities or eateries. At mealtime, the chef will have a kitchen with stainless-steel appliances old Judge Blossom could only have imagined. Swap stories and make plans for tomorrow around the unique, granite-topped island. This is Classic Cabin, right down to the bear on the chandelier! Little Bear is tucked back behind Big Bear so you have to walk along the side of the big house all the way to Little Bear. There is a hot tub shared between the two homes which offers the perfect place to relax after a day on the slopes!
When it's time for bed you'll find that Little Bear isn't so little. With three bedrooms and a loft, it will sleep 12. The master bedroom is on the top floor and includes a queen sized bed with a private bathroom and an open loft that houses an additional queen mattress. A large bathroom splits the hall between this room and the second upstairs bedroom, which includes two sets of bunk beds and a queen bed. The third bedroom is on the main floor and contains another set of bunk beds and queen bed as well. And just as you might suspect, where there's a Little Bear, there's a Big Bear as well - a cabin right next door, that is. Combine the two cabins, and you have the perfect place for a family reunion (up to 31) or that corporate seminar away from ringing phones.
There's lots to do around Government Camp. Notwithstanding the popular and iconic trail right outside your door, skiers have quick access to Skibowl just a few minutes away. Mount Hood Meadows is a little farther, about 17 minutes away, and Timberline Ski Area (by the iconic Timberline Lodge) is about six miles. And when the white hills turn green in summer, they're full of hikers, cyclists, white-water rafters, kayakers...every fun thing you associate with summer. Take in the sounds of beautiful Camp Creek that runs between Big and Little Bear cabins. And there are festivals all year long! There's Mount Hood Heritage Day in September, Hood River Hops Fest in October, and the Annual Wine & Art Festival in November. So, when you make your vacation plans, why not give the Little Bear a chance?
