Travel north from Boise about 30 miles, then ride the stunning, wooded crest of the hills in Boise National Forest on Banks Lowman Road for another 20 miles or so, until you reach a sliver of verdant beauty known as Garden Valley. One segment of a popular daytrip (especially for motorcyclists!) known as the Boise/Lowman/Banks Loop, Garden Valley and nearby Crouch are traditional stopping-off points on this loop where travelers can rest and grab a some lunch before heading back around to Boise. Prior to the opening of Highway 17 (a.k.a., Banks/Lowman Road) in 1999, the road to Lowman was not for the faint of heart. At that time, the road to Lowman was not via Garden Valley, but rather by a treacherous gravel switchback snaking up from Idaho City. Now, Highway 17 is a paved corridor that whisks the motorist through breathtaking scenery, historic places, and intriguing landscapes. It offers incomparable glimpses of wilderness, yet is easily and safely traveled.
