Local history has it that in 1891, one Mr. Alcorn was so impressed with the way the spring sunlight lit up the cottonwoods around the "Salmon" post office (named after the nearby river), he dubbed the place, "Brightwood." It stuck.

More than a century later, Brightwood isn't much bigger. However, located as it is in the Mount Hood National Forest near the confluence of the Sandy and Salmon Rivers, what's outside the little village accounts for much of the draw.

Reaching out like tendrils from just beyond the village are no less than 17 bike trails of varying lengths and difficulties, making Brightwood a cyclist's paradise.
Sandwiched between two rivers, it's also no surprise that one of Brightwood's businesses is a fishing supply shop. Whether it's biking, hiking, fishing - whatever! Brightwood has all the recreational perks one would expect to find in a mountain forest at an elevation of 1,164 feet.

In winter, Brightwood is not far from many of the popular ski slopes that call the area around Mount Hood their home. Brightwood is one of the unincorporated communities in the Mount Hood Corridor. Take Oregon's I-84 east to the Scenic Byway (Highway 26). Located between Sandy and Wemme, take the turn-off from 26 and go about 22 miles. Take the E. Brightwood Loop Rd. turn-off for about a half-mile, and your're there, where good times abound and the trees are ablaze with sunlight!
