When you're in Hood River, hold onto your hat! Bring your wetsuit and board: you're in the windsurfing capital of the world. Hood River is situated on the Columbia River in the stunningly beautiful Columbia River Gorge. Long before Hood River became the place to be for windsurfing, its was renowned for its apples and pears. (It is regarded as one of the premier producers of Anjou pears in the world.) In late April, at the start of the Hood River Blossom Festival, you can hop on the Mt. Hood Scenic Railroad, follow the old fruit train route, and stock up on fresh fruits as you experience the area's natural beauty. There's also biking, hiking, fishing, golf, wine tasting and farm and garden tours in Hood River. Originally dubbed the "Labeasche River" in 1805 by Lewis and Clark after one of the French-Canadian watermen who worked the area, it wasn't until sometime in the 1850s that it was renamed "Hood River," after the mountain, by a local landowner named Mary Coe. The town was incorporated in 1895 and became the county seat for Hood River County. Economically, Hood River came of age in 1933 on the coat tails of Roosevelt's Bonneville Dam Project further down the Columbia. In an attempt to incentivize economic development along the Columbia River Gorge, the Port Authority of Hood River was created in the same year and charged with the task. Today, not only are there more than a dozen wineries along the Hood River, the area is also home to Full Sail Brewing Company, tech industries like Insitu and Hood Technologies, clothing and sports equipment manufacturer DaKine, and vegetarian food manufacturer Turtle Island Foods, makers of Tofurky. Hood River, with its many restaurants and shops, is a vibrant economic hub in the Columbia River Gorge, a must-see destination for anyone interested in experiencing the charm and natural wonders of the Hood River Valley and the surrounding area.
