Back in 1854, one of the things the budding communities in and around the Columbia River Gorge needed was lumber. Aware of this, Jonah Mosier rose to the occasion and, over time, built three sawmills, all of which were successively destroyed by floods. Not one to quit, Mosier turned to a more basic need and an even wider market: the limitless appetites of all the hungry miners in Oregon, Montana, and Idaho. He switched to cattle raising and thereby founded a family dynasty that's now been cemented in the little town of Mosier, a picturesque little community (population, about 410) near the banks of the Columbia River about an hour and fifteen minutes east of Portland, OR.
