Back in 1882, when Samuel Welch and his son William poked around the creek that would come to bear his name, he certainly never envisioned a golf course. Nevertheless, when you come on a visit to Welches, bring your clubs. There are no less than three golf courses in the area. The first course, founded in 1928, was actually the first one in Oregon. When you break from the links, grab your fishing rod. From its origin way up in Reid Glacier, the Salmon River runs right through Welches, and with it come wild salmon and steelhead. (Fish populations are strained, so it's catch and release.) Or, take the land option and hike the Cascade Streamwatch Trail where you can view wild fish in their natural habitat. If you're into cycling, pick from one of 45 bike routes around Welches. Hikers can choose from 31 trails of varying lengths and difficulty in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wildnerness Area. And, of course, there are plenty of places to camp, climb, raft, horseback ride - whatever your taste. As with many places around Mount Hood, Welches does double duty in winter. There are 4 ski resorts nearby where you can also ski cross country, snowboard, snowshoe, tube, snowmobile, or just relax on a sleighride. Or, just sit in front of a warm fire with some hot chocolate (or something else) and enjoy the stunning views everywhere you look.
