In 1889, a man named Thomas McConnell bought a bunch of land on either side of Highway 89 on the west shore of Lake Tahoe just south of Tahoe City and called it the Homewood District. It became official in 1909 when it was given a post office. Since then, the city is known mostly as the place where Homewood Resort is located, a resort whose topography - with a mountain so close to the lake, it seems to rise up out of it - has made it renowned for its "peak to shore" skiing. Squaw Valley, Alpine, and Northstar are all within 25 miles of Homewood.
