Once known simply as "Timberfarm," Georgia Pacific acquired the property in 1972, re-named it "Northstar," and set it on a trajectory to its present status as a world-class winter and summer resort. Like some other notable resorts - Squaw Valley and Vail in Colorado come to mind - its success has been such that it is regarded more as an actual city than simply a remarkable example of expert planning and private enterprise. Throughout the '80s and '90s, Northstar added runs for snowboarding and snow tubing. In 1999, Northstar's lifts were approved for summer use, thereby laying the groundwork for what would evolve into today's 89 trails (100 miles total) of varying difficulty for biking and hiking. Now, on Northstar's 3,000 acres, visitors can enjoy every manner of winter sports from skiing, snowboarding, and skating, to anything associated with summer.
