When the brief mining boom between 1863 and 1864 in the hills around Squaw went bust, the miners moved down from the mountains and, settling on the shores of Lake Tahoe, founded a community called Tahoe City. About a hundred years later, after the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley laid the groundwork for a world class resort, Tahoe City not only benefits from its proximity to that venue, it has since built its own reputation as a mecca for all the water sports one would associate with beautiful Lake Tahoe.
