Like Squaw Valley, Tahoma's history is tied to the 1960 Olympics. Because there was no room for the cross-country and biathlon events (1960 was the first time the biathlon was included), a special venue was built at McKinney Creek near Tahoma. Though McKinney Creek Stadium was demolished in 1991, Squaw Valley Resort (a.k.a. Olympic City, about ½ hour to the north) is alive and well, and offers world-class winter and summer activities. Squaw is great, but if you want some other places a little closer, there's great skiing at Homewood Resort (about 4 miles away), and Granlibaken (the area's oldest resort about 8 miles away). All these places are, of course, wonderful and fun-filled any time of year!

The area around Tahoma is abundant with natural wonders. Bliss State Park (744 dog-friendly acres donated by the Bliss family in 1929) offers magnificent mountain and lake views. There's also
Meeks Bay Resort and Marina, a popular place for water and jet-skiing, picnicking, and frolicking on the soft, sandy beach. Meeks also has boat launches. Or, if you're into 4-wheeling, try your driving skills on the nearby Rubicon Jeep trail. And finally, visit the Ehrman Mansion and Visitor's Center where you can check out the opulent digs of the wealthy Ehrman family, and stroll the grounds where you'll find historic markers about Tahoe history.
