Tahoe City Retro Family Lodge 430 Upper Road, Tahoe City, CA 96145

When you step into the enormous great room of this home and look up at the vaulted ceilings through the web of thick, unfinished timbers; when the beautiful Tahoe forest grabs you through the two-story windows, and you check out the cool circular fireplace perched on rustic stone, you just might exclaim, "far out, man!" And if that doesn't do it, the groovy cedar-lined sauna with heated rocks should clinch it: This place was clearly somebody's dream lodge in the '70s. But don't expect to see "The Brady Bunch" on the brand new, flat-screen TV or find anything but the most up-to-date amenities throughout. What you will have at this lodge is the best of both worlds: '70s ambiance with all the very real beauty and adventure to be found in the Tahoe City area.

Though you're just a mile and a half from Tahoe City, you'll still feel many miles away from the distractions of civilization. The plush leather chairs and recliner in the great room almost call out, "sit down!" No hassle lighting the fireplace either - it's gas-assisted and you'll find more firewood in the garage. Listen to the stereo or that oldies CD and let the memories roll as you imbibe a cool drink from the wet-bar. Weather permitting, step out on the deck and smell the pines! And don't worry; you're linked-in here too. Pull up the comfy chair to the work station and get online or, if you need to, print something out as well.

If you're not in the mood for any of the 32 eateries around Tahoe City, it's not a problem. The designated chef will have everything she or he might need to whip up a great vacation meal, including a comprehensive spice cabinet and a Kitchenaid rice cooker for that perfectly cooked side-dish. This place holds a lot of people (sleeps 12) and so does the long wooden dining table. With room for eight hungry vacationers, there's room for a few more on the bench at the bar by the kitchen. (You'll find the sauna and the washer and dryer just off the kitchen as well.)

A big crowd needs a lot of beds and bathrooms, and this lodge has both (four bedrooms and three and a half baths). The master king suite is on the main floor and opens out to a second deck for that morning stretch in the fresh air. Upstairs are three queen bedrooms, each with forest views. Two of these have half bathrooms that share a common shower. A small sitting room with cable TV converts to a loft bedroom. Just draw the curtains and unfold the sleeper couch. The game and bunk room also does double duty. Rack 'em up at the pool table or plunk out a tune on the piano. There's a TV for watching movies, a movie collection, plenty of space for horsing around, boxes of toys, window seats for playing and napping, and four fold-down bunks. (The bunks are rustic; good for kids only.)

In summer, there are eight great beaches between Dollar Point to the north, and Tahoe City. In Tahoe City there are three: Tahoe City Commons, Tahoe State Rec., and Lake Forest Beach. If you've got the boat, you can launch it over at the free Coast Guard boat launch. The Truckee River, with its fishing, rafting, kayaking, and more, is less than a mile away. Then, of course, there's Lake Tahoe. Charter a fishing trip or an evening cruise with one of the local companies. There are festivals too! In June, there's the annual "Heart and Soltice Festival." Come in October, and experience the fun of Oktoberfest at the "Tahoe City Harvest Festival." For winter sports, in addition to Squaw Valley which is about nine miles away, Alpine and Homewood Resorts are just seven miles. Northstar is a little farther at 15.

So gather the family, the group, and the memories and come to this beautiful retro lodge in Tahoe City and you'll see: indoors or out, there's plenty to do any time of year!

Just come back from a wonderful week of skiing,
City Retro Family Lodge is in a wonderfully quiet location but is 2 minutes from Tahoe City and 10-15 minutes from Alpine Meadows and Squaw. There's loads of space , all the equipment you need (and more) , a fabulous playroom for the kids to hang out and sleep in. It also has some of the most hip wallpaper you'll ever see (downstairs showroom in particular), a stunning fireplace, and, to cap it all, a real working mechanical fruit/slot machine! A great family place which we'll very likely be back to next ski season.

Beds were very comfy. Bathrooms were adorable! Plaid wallpaper? How can u not love it!? Great living room with 6 leather recliners and a circular fireplace, so comfy and a great space for a larger group. Thank you!

Plenty of room for people to spread out! Kitchen, dining and family area is very comfortable and open to the porch so it was easy to cook, visit, move through, and keep an eye on small children. The woods outside are nice and it is easy to get to walking/ running trails. Lots of fans in the house to keep the air moving in the summer. On summer weekends it is about 10 minutes to Tahoe city intersection with 89 as the traffic is heavy.

The cabin is loaded with all stuffs you need for cooking. We had a great time staying at the cabin. The only thing that owner should look at is to remodel the second for and have a better lighting throughout the second floor.

This is the perfect place to gather a multi-generation family for a winter vacation. It's equipped with every piece of cooking equipment, game, puzzle, and outdoor recreation item you could possibly want--not to mention beautiful views out every window, a sauna, movies, an endless supply of firewood, and access to family-oriented ski areas. Tahoe-area vacation renters should also know it's well heated. We loved it.

The property was wonderful. We were so surprised with how well stocked the home was. We enjoyed the privacy of the home being at the end of street with know homes behind or on the side of it. The living room was perfect for large family meals and the spacious sleeping rooms allowed everyone to be comfortable. The children love the bunk room fully stocked with toys, games, and TV. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in this wonderful home and hope to vacation there again next year.

Our daughter used this house as her base for her beachside wedding and then the outdoor under the trees of the property for the reception dinner. It was a small group but we enjoyed the ambiance of the outdoors as a wonderful setting. Lovely home and great with small children.

This house is not flashy but instead is very comfortable. Extremely well furnished (especially in the kitchen), lots of room and beds and plenty to do including a pool table. We heartily recommend it.
